Cape Town Sardine Run
A massive number of sardines covered the sand at Hout Bay beach on Sunday 20 November 2011 during what was a fairly rare and unusually large sardine run in Cape Town.
The sardine run usually takes place between May and July on the KwaZulu-Natal coast, but this time Capetonians, with their fishing nets and baskets in hand, got a piece of the action ...
Sardines cover the sand at Hout Bay beach on Sunday 20 November 2011.
The sardine run was an unusual occurrence for Cape Town.
A run occurs when the water temperature drops, causing millions of sardines to swim to shore.
Most of those catching sardines on Hout Bay beach were fishermen, who would use the fish as bait.
Spreading for kilometres into the ocean, some people choose to go further into the sea to make their catch.
