A municipal demarcation protest turned violent at Malamulele near Thohoyandou in Limpopo on Monday.
The SABC reported that several vehicles and offices were set alight, roads blockaded and shops looted.
Residents are demanding to be separated from the Thulamela municipality in favour of their own municipality.
The national broadcaster said that thousands of protesters blocked off all the roads leading to Malamulele, including the Punda Maria road that leads to the Kruger National Park.
News24 reports that a total of 65 protesters were arrested for public violence in the area. Those arrested were expected to appear in court soon.
