A "blue light" VIP escort who allegedly shot out the tyre of a motorist, causing a head-on collision that injured eight people, appeared in the Camperdown Magistrate's Court on Thursday.
The accused, Constable Hlanganani Nxumalo (29) of Pietermaritzburg, faced eight charges of attempted murder. The incident took place on the N3 near Camperdown on 15 November. Magistrate Thys Taljaard postponed the case to 14 January. Nxumalo was refused bail on 19 November. It was, however, understood that an appeal against the dismissal of the bail application would be heard in the Pietermaritzburg High Court. No official could say whether the driver of the vehicle from which Nxumalo allegedly fired his gun would be charged with any offence. According to one lawyer, the least offence he could be charged with was leaving the scene of an accident.
