A rape case involving a senior metro police official has been postponed until June in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court.

The Johannesburg Metro Police Department's head of internal affairs Amon Kganyago is on trial for raping a 39-year-old female colleague in her own home on the morning of 27 May 2007.

The matter was on Friday postponed after the woman finished testifying.

The widowed mother of two, who told the court during previous testimony how Kganyago allegedly overpowered her, was also questioned during cross-examination about how she was dressed before the rape.

Kganyago arrived at her home, while her children were visiting relatives, to pick up camera equipment for work.

She said Kganyago allegedly first tried to hug her and, when she refused because she felt uncomfortable doing so wearing a nightdress and a gown, he started chasing her inside her home.

She told the court that some of her furniture and her main bedroom door were damaged.

She reported the incident to the police shortly afterwards. After she had informed her employer about the rape an investigation was opened. It cleared Kganyago. She then started being unfairly treated by colleagues who supported him.

She was forced to resign from the metro department in April 2008. The Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) found last year that she had been unfairly treated, verbally harassed and intimidated for reporting the rape.

Kganyago was never suspended from work, despite the nature of the allegation.

However, Metro police Senior Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said on Sunday that Kganyago was now on suspension with pay since January this year.

Minnaar said the suspension came after the department decided to re-open an internal investigation into the rape allegation against Kganyago.

Kganyago was out on R3000 bail. The case was postponed to 10 June.
