Inspector Marianette Olivier said around 1am on Wednesday two ATMs in Bloekom street in Kamesh were bombed and an unknown amount of money taken.
Police, while responding to the incident, drove past three vehicles believed to be used by the robbers.
Police gave chase and came under fire from people inside the cars.
Police chasing the three cars lost the trail of the men but they were detected again by dog unit members.
The men had ditched two bakkies and ran into the bushes. After investigations it was discovered that the two bakkies had been reported stolen in Port Elizabeth.
The third vehicle was found and one man was arrested in connection with the blasts.
No one was injured during the incident. Police were searching for eight other people in connection with the crime, said Olivier.
