The man and woman were driving in Montana on Thursday afternoon when they were hijacked by two men armed with pistols, said Captain Portia Maleka.

They were driven to a deserted area in some veld in Kameeldrift where the hijackers shot both of them in their chests. The attackers then ran away.

Maleka said the two were discovered by a passer-by who alerted the authorities.

The man and women sustained serious injuries and were taken to hospital.

Nothing was stolen from them.

Maleka said police were trying to understand the motive for the shooting.
