A taxi owner was shot dead in Germiston, allegedly by security guards hired by a rival taxi association on Wednesday, Johannesburg police said.

Captain Julia Claassen said taxi owners gathered in Primrose at 5.30pm when guards hired by the Lethabong Taxi Association approached them and allegedly opened fire, killing one of the owners. Others ran for cover. No one was injured.

Police took several men armed with rifles into custody for questioning.
