A taxi driver was shot dead in Makapanstad near Hammanskraal and two men were being sought for his murder, North West police said on Wednesday.

Inspector Wilmarie van der Merwe said the taxi driver, 38, was driving with one passenger from Mothibistad to Hammanskraal at around 7pm on Monday.

At the taxi rank on Ramapoza street in Makapanstad, two men stopped the taxi.

One of the men fired a shot at the taxi driver and hit him in the head. The driver died on scene.

The two men then ordered the passenger to search the deceased driver's pockets. The men took money and a cellphone and ran away.

The passenger then went for help at a nearby tavern.

A case of murder was being investigated. Two men were being sought by police, said Van der Merwe.
