US President George W. Bush led Democratic challenger John Kerry by five points in a new Time magazine poll out on Friday.

If the November 2 election were held today, 51 percent of 1200 likely voters questioned between October 19 and 21 said they would vote for Bush, 46 percent for Kerry and two percent for independent consumer crusader Ralph Nader.

Last week's Time poll found 48 percent of likely voters would vote for Bush, 47 percent for Kerry and three percent for Nader.

Bush's approval rating in the latest poll rose to 53 percent, with 44 percent saying they disapproved of how he is handling his job, a four-point improvement over last week when Bush's negatives were even with his positives.

The poll also showed terrorism tied with the economy as the most important issue in the election, with 24 percent saying it was most important and 24 percent voting for the economy.

The poll had an error margin of plus or minus three percentage points.
