Republicans retain House of Reps
Posted Wed, 03 Nov 2004

The US House of Representatives will remain firmly in the grip of George W. Bush's Republican Party, US networks reported, as election results rolled in late on Tuesday.

After analysing early returns, the CBS and ABC television networks predicted that Republicans would retain control of the 435-seat House, and possibly widen their lead.

At present, 246 House seats are held by Republicans, 210 by Democrats, two seats are vacant and one is held by a Democrat-leaning Independent.

The winning party needs at least 218 seats to control the 435-seat chamber.
