Republicans maintained control of the Senate, US television networks reported on Wednesday, turning back several close but ultimately inadequate Democratic challenges in key states.

Democrats had hoped that victory in a handful of hard-fought states would allow them to win control of the Senate, which Republicans controlled by a slim margin.

But Republican victories in conservative-leaning states like South Carolina, Louisiana and Georgia put control of the Senate out of Democrats' reach.

The loss of the Senate ensures that President George W. Bush's Republican Party will again control both chambers of Congress, after already locking up control of the US House of Representatives, according to voting returns late on Tuesday.
