The City of Cape Town, of which Helen Zille is mayor, voted in her favour, according to results released at the election centre.

The Democratic Alliance, which Zille heads, obtained 55.18 percent of the vote in the municipality.

The African National Congress, which used to run the city under previous mayor Nomaindia Mfeketo, got nearly one third of the vote with 29.74 percent.

The Independent Democrats, which has formed a coalition with the DA in the past, obtained 2.3 percent, with 14 561 Capetonians making their mark next to Patricia De Lille's face on the ballot.

The African Christian Democratic Party also had a presence in the Mother City with 11 293 voters giving it a 1.78 percent slice of the Cape of Good Hope.

A total of 663 569 ballots were cast in the municipality.
