Democratic Alliance councillor Daniel Plato refused to comment on Tuesday on a report that he was set to replace party leader Helen Zille as the mayor of Cape Town.

"I am not able to comment at the moment," Plato told Sapa.

"Nothing is set and done, the federal council still has to discuss the issue. Any statements will come from the mayor's office."

SABC radio news reported that Plato was set to take up the post as Zille prepared to take up the position of premier of the Western Cape.

The DA's federal executive was set to meet on Tuesday morning to discuss Zille's replacement and the appointment of cabinet members in the province.

Plato is a member of the Cape Town Mayoral Committee for housing and a councillor for Ward 22 in the areas of Belhar, Elsiesrivier, Parow Industrial and Uitsig.

Zille's office was unavailable for comment.
