It's been a tough year for South Africa ? we've battled through a recession and seen a somewhat contentious change of government. But it hasn't been all bad ? we bring you nine reasons why 2009 rocked?

Gill Marcus

For the first time in South Africa's history we have a female Reserve Bank governor. Gill Marcus, who took over the reins from Tito Mboweni, has experience in the public and private sector and she's been labelled a "progressive thinker".

Tri Nations

South Africa won their first Tri Nations competition since 2004. The Springboks proved that they truly are the best in the world when they united the nation all over again. They did us proud and we all rejoiced in their achievement when the IRB named the Boks as the rugby team of 2009.

Confederations Cup

Many people were pessimistic about our ability to host the 2010 FIFA World Cup and the Confederations Cup was seen as a real test for the country. The tournament was a resounding success. Even our team did very well. That left many South Africans proud and with a little hope that we may well have a chance come 2010.

SA companies among the best

Local companies MTN, Bidvest and Sasol were listed among the best 40 in the world. MTN made it into the top 10 on the list. These companies showed that our country has a lot to offer the world.

Maria Ramos

This South African businesswoman was named the African Business Woman of the Year. Ramos is an inspiration to many and she's been recognised outside our borders for her amazing contribution to the business world. She is currently heading the Absa group and her track record speaks for itself.

Gender Equality

South Africa is ranked number six in the world when it comes to promoting gender equality. This country offers many opportunities to women and we have seen a growing number of women in leadership positions.

Mandela Day

The United Nations has authorised the implementation of Mandela Day across the world. On Mandela's birthday people from all over the world will honour our icon by helping those less fortunate.

Life is getting better

Despite the large number of unemployed South Africans, life is getting better for many of our people. Statistics South Africa revealed that living conditions are steadily improving for ordinary people. There has been an increase in the number of people with access to electricity, television, proper sanitation, ownership of houses and access to schooling.

HIV prevalence declining

A recent study revealed that the prevalence of HIV in children and teenagers is on the decline. We've seen a drop from 5.6 to 2.5 percent in children between the ages of two and 14. The report also showed that HIV infections in the 15 to 49 age-group have dropped in the Northern Cape, Western Cape, Free State and Gauteng. There's also been an increase in the number of young males and females who use condoms. This was attributed to the successful implementation of HIV interventions. The study revealed that HIV awareness programmes are beginning to pay off.

The verdict is out, South Africans ? all is not lost. There are those among us who are set on improving this country and we need your support.
