Our quest to find South Africa's best newsy blogs continues. Last week we delved into the mind of an ordinary (okay, admittedly pretty erudite) South African Thinking Aloud. This week we discovered a blogger who reckons that politics and business are inseparable.

What's it all about?

The Democratic Capitalist (yip, the name says it all) explores the relationship between business and politics, in the hopes of finding a way of uniting business and opposition politics. In a way, the blog is a call to arms to those tired of injustice at a governmental level to take up the fight in a new and innovative way.

Recent posts have raised questions about the Competition Commission and the value of punishment, the effect of all the recent strikes on the already-struggling economy, the viability of the proposed National Health Insurance scheme and practicality of the continued government support of the SABC.

Why we like it

The Democratic Capitalist offers a fresh approach to politics. Admittedly, the blog takes a particular economic stance (hence the 'capitalist' in the title), but you know what you're getting. The entries, which are generally pithy and thought-provoking, provide digestible analyses of economic issues.

More for capitalist who has a passing interest in business issues than the one who avidly watches the stock exchange, the blog helps contextualise politics within an economic framework.

Short snippet from the blog

"I've been scanning the various financial news sites and I see almost all of them are awash with stories about the National Health Insurance (NHI) proposed by government and how it is likely to cost tax-payers around R100-billion.

"The story itself is not hugely new and many in government have been talking about its implementation over the last few years. The big-wigs in the various medical insurers have accepted that government is coming to play in their play-ground and that they might as well look elsewhere for growth opportunities.

"The problem comes in when you try and drop another layer of pressure onto a creaking infrastructure. We somehow have R100-billion to implement the NHI — which we don't at the moment — but we don't have enough to settle the doctors and nurses wage strikes?"

  • You are not a business buff

  • You agree with the principles of capitalism (or, alternately, would like to criticise them).
