Prosecutors are trying to locate the cling wrap allegedly used to suffocate acting judge Patrick Maqubela, it was reported on Wednesday.
The Cape Times reported that the key piece of evidence had been missing since last week.
It was believed to be at police headquarters in Pretoria but prosecutor Bonnie Curro-Gamwo said this was not a definite.
It was the State's case that the 80-centimetre long piece of cling wrap was used to suffocate Maqubela, then discarded in a bin in the main bedroom of his flat.
His DNA was found on the plastic, as well as his wife Thandi's thumbprint and palm print.
According to the newspaper, the trial was postponed until Monday to allow police time to find the cling wrap.
The acting judge's body was found in his luxury apartment in Bantry Bay in June 2009. His wife and her co-accused, businessman Vela Mabena, face charges of murder, fraud and forgery.
