DEAD FISH VAAL RIVER 1 DEC 2008
"); document.write("Dear Sir / Madam

I have just returned from a weekend at our Cottage on the Vaal river located at Shores of Loch Vaal.

( Weekend 28th -30th November 2008 ).

I am shocked with the number of dead fish in the river – all the way from Loch Vaal and up the main river

to Millionaire’s bend ( that is as far as we travelled from the barrage area). In and around all reed area’s there is

significant amounts of dead fish as well as dead fish floating in the main river.

My concerns are as follows :

a. Report downloaded from Rand water website “Suitability of Water for Contact Sports” – 28th Nov 2008,

appear to indicate that there is no problem in the “Shores of Loch Vaal “ area. However the amount

of dead fish and the massive discolouration of the water seem to indicate otherwise. What is the

real situation ?

b. Who’s responsibility is it to clean up and remove dead fish ?

c. To who else should we send our concerns to ?

If I’m not mistaken, I have always been under the impression that most of the Gauteng drinking water is pumped

from this region.

The Minister of Water Affairs recently said on Radio 702, that there is no crisis with water in South Africa – however

I regularly check the “quality of water reports” and it appears that most of the problems consistently originate

from “Klip river” & “Rietspruit ” area’s. ( This information also shown on “potential microbiological health effects

in the Vaal Barrage Catchment” report generated by Rand Water Board.

Your reply would be appreciated.
