document.write("Kgalema Motlanthe can sugar coat name changing as much as he wants. it does not change the fact that the end result is that South Africa loses its true heritage and it is replaced with an illusion. Removing the old names is the first step in rewriting the country's history. It is impossible to do so while the physical reminders of the past are manisfest in daily life. In erasing the cultural and historical identities of the Cape Dutch, Voortrekker and British Colonial descendents is a calculated move to marginalize whites. How else can you explain the ongoing attack on anything which can even remotely considered colonial.
What is worse is that, in practice, changing names is a \"fast track\" (one of the current regime's favorite buzz-words) path to enrichment. Changing street names is make-work with no lasting economic benefit other than for the official getting the kick backs from the contractors. WAKE UP!!!
What for 400 years could not be taken by force from our WHITE COLONIAL ancestors is being taken from us like candy from a baby while we sit won our hands not saying a thing about it for fear of being accused of the mortal sin of racism. Brow beaten as this generation is, it is time to make a stand against the destruction of our cultural heritage. The vandalization of new place and street names is the tip of the iceberg. A symptom of a minority that is every day being made to feel like a second class citizen in its own country.

Kenneth Kaunda was a master at this -- while his citizens were experiencing some of the worst forms of depradation he kept harping about South Africa's problems thus getting the world to look at something other than his own track record.
If the money to be spent on name changes was just channelled into RDP housing, sanitation or running water, the councils would be doing something constructive for their people but just at those sitting and deciding on what's best for the people -- they're getting fatter both bodily and financially by the day!. However, for towns to commission research and collate and publish the material would be a costly exercise for which the punch-drunk taxpayer will no doubt have to cough up. I have yet to be convinced that, given the choice between a politically correct street name and reliable basic services (which are sadly lacking in many parts) the majority of disadvantaged people would opt for the street name!.
