Is Mugabe blaming his Rhodesian legacy? The Zimbabweans are generally very well educated. Every Zimbabwean refugee one meets here is pleasant, dignified and well educated. And he/she gets on with trying to make a livilihood here under extremely difficult circumstances.. Peter");

Perhaps the influence of emerging, functionally illiterate role models like Zuma, Mantashe and Malema might have something to do with the devaluation of education at all levels. As long as there are political players without an education kids are going to ask why bother. Just yesterday there was another example - a political/military person from Guinea saying on CNN \"you don't need an education to rule a country\". But then thank goodness we have a real hero in Katlego Zabala - an orphan - poor school - 5 distinctions. So what's the problem? As long as the value associated with Teaching and a \"kick ass\" Education is allowed to be kicked around in the dirt by fools in high places - Educated Adults will remain a scarce commodity.. document.write("Uh, yes Peter, mug-ape does blame Britain for all the country's problems, so is indirectly blaming Rhodesia since Rhodesia was a British colony before declaring independence.
His 'Rhodesian legacy' was a Rhodesian dollar that was almost equal to the British pound ( in 1979 I got $1.09 for a British pound I had ) and an education system based on the (then) very good British GCE 'o', 'M' amd 'A' levels. All he had to do was maintain the schools which he obviously did, leading to a number of well-educated zimbabweans, however the wheels have now come off so to speak & he cannot cope, so it's the colonials British that are to blame.
Blaming whites / former white governments for their own shortcomings is a national pastime in Africa.. Steve");

document.write("As a scholar who did grade ten on the new system in it's first year (2006), I find it hard to understand what adaptations lesser-resourced schools couldn't make. If the teachers weren't familiar with the subject material, they were surely trained? If other \"resources\" were needed, the government would surely have anticipated and budgeted for this? I think the first step towards \"levelling the playing fields\" is levelling the quality of schools, not completely redoing the curriculum! Sounds like the education department needs some education in planning.
Also, many of the faults of the old curriculum were not removed. For example, exams still count for 75% of the overall mark, which means a large percentage of learners who do well throughout the year nearly fail because of their inability to cram a whole year's worth of daily learning into their heads in two to four weeks! It's a pathetic and antiquated system and the reason many private schools and even universities in the states have introduced completely different systems.. Dj");

- Shame on the politicians of the day - It is time to stand up and fight against this oppressive, moronic bunch of criminals that are running the last (barely) functioning country in Southern Africa into the ground. It has been scientifically proven that this scourge of the earth is unquestionably sub-human.

Got an army hidden somewhere?
I agree with your statement 'shame on the politicians of the day' - but exclude our own PM Ian Smith who stayed in zim, berating mug-ape till the end.
This article by an American author makes for very interesting reading...

A point of interest - I helped in the fighting in Rhodesia on many occasions...My mom was born in Bulawayo, The body of your message tells the tale unfortunately...whites in Africa do not have the self belief to be able to stand united against a common enemy.

Equipping the previously dissadvantaged with the skills to earn their place in the modern global market place. The furure of South Africa lies in the investment made in education - not in employment quotas or share transfers. SO MAKE THE INVESTMENT NOW or GO THE WAY OF THE REST OF AFRICA and rely forever on the European charity.
Bye the way, Europe faced a 6 year world war where 15 million people died and countries were destroyed. But Europe did not blame the war for every problem faced over the next 20 years. . I love South Africa");

The only drive seen in them is who can be the coolest and most of the potential role models they have are schemers always looking for a quickie. I guess that if you can get money for nothing, why bother with an education. It's not like the system administrators are really doing much to change the cultural rot that seems to pervuade our society, they seem content to only make a contribution as far as finding blame with someone/something else. Whatever happened to accepting responsibility for your own actions? How does an impoverished orphan get distinctions when others better off fail. That's down to self motivation, maturity and discipline but most kids just want to emulate the gangsters from the states, they think its cool.. mark");

document.write("Tokoloshe,
I hear what you're saying and to some extent agree with you, however all the self belief in the world won't help if you do not have the support/resources to fight back. We did believe that we would persevere and to quote Ian Smith “During UDI we had the greatest national spirit in the world, a fantastic country, great race relations, the happiest black faces in the world … if our friends hadn’t betrayed us, we’d have won,”... BUT, the West seems to have some sort of massive guilt complex ( over slavery perhaps? )and it is Whites in the Western world who are the biggest spanners in the works when it comes to standing united against the enemy...
It would take a huge amount of self-belief to think that you could change the West's mindset and get support - how much worse can things get in zim & yet they do nothing?
Back to the original thread, I notice that in one breath they are blaming apartheid, but in another satement by yousuf gabru, \"the number of schools with pass rates of less than 60 percent had suddenly increased by nearly 20 percent compared to 2007\"... So, 13 years into the 'new' SA education was going along nicely and all of a sudden, in the last two years or so, it starts going wrong... so what happened? certainly not apartheid, more like simple mismanagement..
