document.write("Democracy is relatively civilised ideal that seems to be inherently un-African. That may seem a harsh statement but when one looks at the history of Africa and African leadership it is hardly bigotory. War, revolutions and genocide are the traditional paths to power. To the victor go the spoils, for which a blood price was paid. <br />Democracy is a relatively new concept in Africa.  <br /><br />Democracy was the key word chanted by the opressed masses. However, once achieved, the opressed and their leaders no sooner reverted to the opressors. So it is not about democracy, but about power and who weilds it. Have we have learnt nothing - or do we see the vision that Nelson Mandela had of a unified society bonded by diversity?<br /><br />I don't think that democracy is necessarily the answer. Communism definitely isn't. The democratic system is open to large scale abuse at the hands of the mega rich (and powerful.) Behind the scenes politics of coersion and power brokering disinfranchise the electorate.<br /><br />These figures don't surprise me. You only have to look at the welcoming reception Mugabe got from our esteemed politicians at the Zuma's inorgeration (yes he was actually invited!) This speaks volumes on african pshycology, and the acceptance of the concept of democracy  . Julian");
