Ability is what counts
"); document.write("Ebrahim states he is 'not naive enough to be a utopian communist', but then goes on to espouse ideas rather similar to this hopelessly failed doctrine. We need to be practical in this discussion. Firstly, have the people who currently run the mines displayed an ability to extract the mineral wealth to date? Answer: yes. Secondly, has the ANC government displayed a genuine ability to run its own enterprises such as Eskom, SAA, Transnet, SABC etc successfully? Answer: no. Absolutely no debate there. So now you wish to place the mines under a government which a) does not have the ability to effectively run even its own affairs, which b) has a dreadful history of corruption all the way to the top and c) is influenced by the Communist Party, whose ideology has PROVEN to be a dreadful failure worldwide - and you now expect South Africans as a whole to benefit? Sorry mate, it cannot work, finish and klaar. All it will mean is more cash siphoned off into the ANC leaders' pockets, the closure of more mines due to inefficiency and many more people out of work.. alan"); document.write("
Nationalisation
"); document.write("Just another article to try and provoke an angry response ha ha! As usual Ebrahim Moolla has taken the contrarian view or could he actually be as stupid as Julius? The truth is even if we did want to nationalise the global governments and corporations with intersts in SA would make sure we were brought to our knees financially. Take any country that taken assets (just look North) and you will economic collapse. No-one will invest in a country that doesn't protect property rights.

Both have the wrong end of the stick
"); document.write("Parastatals are already costing this country billions of Rand in bail-out money, so lets not talk about USA bailouts. Thats not even taking into account that the inability for these companies to produce profits is a huge loss in Tax Revenues. We should however be looking at the Value Added industry in our mining sectors. Perhaps we should be selling our mining output, which is being used anyway for another countries value added production, to those companies who are prepared to partner local value added producers.. Jonny"); document.write("
Nationalisation
"); document.write("I find Ebrahim's allusion of crime etc being due to poverty challenging but nationalisation as a panacea is crazy.
I say if give every miner a stake in the operation and this would assist only them. Rather than that follow up the Bafokeng example by giving every affected person a stake in the mines through a social tax system. Noble Laureate Yunus Mahomed has a briliant idea and that is through social development tax incentives whereby every one and not a particular ethnic group of race benefits through empowerment because mines have a lifespan and when the gold runs out what then?
No Mr Moola is wrong to posit a utopianistic solution.. Saber Ahmed Jazbhay"); document.write("

Nationalize ANC fatcats furtunes
"); document.write("I would advise Mr. Malema to aim to nationalize not the mines but rather the ill-gotten gains of ANC FATCAT Billionairs! I am sure he will be very popular with the poverty stricken South Africans of what ever colour. . Gabor Jeney"); document.write("
the same will happen with the mines as what is happening to our schools and hospitals
"); document.write("I thought it would have been a good idea until a friend pointed out that the same will happen with the mines as what is happening to our schools and hospitals. Nothing good can come out of it. They the government will run it in to the ground literally!. Louis"); document.write("
Nationalize ANC fatcats furtunes
"); document.write("Gabor Jeney I agree wholeheartedly with you on this one. He would become a national hero. And our country needs politicians that would fight for the people and not just them self’s. . Louis"); document.write("
Ebrahim
"); document.write("Failed to give one reason why mines should be nationalised. How will that help the miners in ANYWAY aside fomr putting their jobs at risk? Will mining be cheaper? Will miners suddenly be able to earn double the salary? More like it puts even more workers at risk as Government diverts tax funds from other areas to bailout the mining industry as seen from the track record of Nationalised companies all over the world. If Government can't even properly manage Eskom, SABC, SAA, of which SAA is the only one that actually compete's globally, HTF are they going to manage mines which have to be ultra competitive to survive?. L_M"); document.write("
Be sensible
"); document.write("Mines need capital to operate. Capital needs good management otherwise it runs down the tubes ala Zimbabwe and South African Governments. Isn't that the reason why the parastatals are being brought to book. Inability is the word. If 75% of all the incomes of the so called fat cats are taken and distributed amongst the poor, maybe every individual may receive a liter of milk a month.
The only thing Malema really wants is to replace the present competent managers with incompetent managers who will then be on their level of reasoning.
Creating jobs and teaching people to be productive in thier workplace is the priority, not fleecing the mines. Charlie"); document.write("

Nationalisation of Mines
"); document.write("It should be remembered that Africans have a culture of destruction, not construction! Mugabe is a prime example having led the destruction of Zimbabwe, impoverishing the nation while he and his criminal supporters live in the lap of luxury. When Mugabe arrives at any African gathering he receives the loudest applause confirming that his peers (Other African leaders) support him and his destruction. Why should we think that the other African leaders will be any different? As stated in other comments, the parastatals have all been run into the ground so now is a good time for the mentally challenged to have a go at the destruction of the Mines. . Turbo 1"); document.write("
Mines should be Nationilised
"); document.write("Mines should be nationilised then they can steal from themselves and not from foreign investors.Sat down with canadian mining investor this week.Currently they drilling in Namibia for uranium and Zambia and diamonds in angola. They spending about 30 million us dollars in those countrys each....they refuse to do bussiness with SA>why? They say south africans cant get the concept that they dont have to steal from them when they partners...when you partner you make money together...and everybody benefits !!!!!. Contridicting"); document.write("
Let Africa sink
"); document.write("I am really getting tired of listening to people like Malema talk about taking something they have not created themselves. Turbo 1 : good comment. Africa on it's own is mud huts, a few rickety goats, a population 90% lower than it is now and a life expectancy of about 30 years. The only reason that SA is not like that is because of colonialism. The dream of all the philanthopists and brilliant minds are lurking in the townships is nothing more than that, a dream. If in thousands of years of 'independence' prior to colonial 'interference' produced nothing, 15 years of independence is going to do no better. Fact is, the greatest black South Africans are successful due to apartheid, not in spite of it. There is a 'golden' goose on SA and it's made of White gold. Kill that goose at your peril. . Charles"); document.write("
Nationalisation? Hell no!
"); document.write("The obvious answer to the question is HELL NO! If you nationalise the mines, then what next? The government cannot run its own parastatals - if the mines become like Eskom and the SABC, which they inevitably will if nationalised, thhis country will be doomed.
Capitalism and privatisation provide the funds that the government needs to keep this coutry going, whether Julius Malema and his ilk like it or not, and the mines have been the backbone of our economy since the Cullinan Diamond was discovered. If you break the backbone, you paralyse the economy.

Nationalising means that the workers of the bottom of the food chain will never ever ever even have the chance, to own shares, to own the mines that they work for. There will be no Bridget Hadebe success stories.
Nationalisation or any other form of communist practice, does not achieve the goal that it is supposed to. There is a reason why the bastion of communism, Russia, has now become capitalist. Now, is there any point in staying on the ship if the captain has left?. Andrea"); document.write("
