Social groups thrive within an environment of clearly defined rules and boundaries (laws) with equally clear rewards for compliance as well as penalties for noncompliance. However, when laws and/or appropriate penalties are not enforced, the social structure begins to fall apart as boundaries are stretched further and further until you end up in a ‘lawless’ society where anything goes. <br /><br />Every day we are challenged to choose between what’s ‘Right’ and what’s ‘Easy’ and throughout history, man has proven to have a strong bias for what’s ‘Easy’. In a society without appropriate consequences for inappropriate behaviour, we rely on the moral values of individuals to make the ‘Right’ choices... unfortunately, this leaves an entire populace vulnerable to the low moral threshold of a small percentage of the population that will become a larger percentage if left unchecked... Petty criminals become hardened criminals when crime becomes a way of life.<br /><br />Altering the behaviour of an entire nation is not difficult, it simply requires clearly defined laws, vigilance in enforcing them and appropriate consequences for noncompliance (that are well publicised to the nation)... thereafter, these laws become self governing... When was the last time you saw someone fire up a cigarette in a shopping mall? Not long ago, this was acceptable social practice!<br /><br />There are many social drivers and socio-economic challenges behind SA’s crime pandemic, but a good start in addressing this is for the criminal elements in our society to feel the consequences of their choices... consequences that match the crime... Violent crime is killing our economy and killing the spirit of loyal South Africans. In my opinion, those who commits violent crimes, looses their human rights as they have willfully violated someone else’s and they should face the consequences.
