You talk of farmers practicing \"ubuntu\" and a small minority of farmers having \"negative' relations with thier farm workers. I must dispute this from indicators in both history and my own personal experience.
History has demonstrated that the National Party and the far right political expressionists drew large support bases from the farming communities. The farmrs of the Northern and Western Transvaal (as it was in the past) formed the hard core of the Afrikaaner volk and the entrenchment of apartheid and its associated practices in this country. It was known during the worst years of apartheid that the support base through the Transvaal farming communities was the core around which conservatism was based. Today, I have seen in my dealings with people from the Far North, the Lichternburg area and the old Western Transvaal that the superior attitude still prevails and the belief that the Afrikaaner is God's chosen volk still exists. Whether this is still as hard core as was the case in years gone by I do not know. Whether this lore is still passed on to the younger generations I do not know. All I do know is that it takes more than a change in statute and in leadership to change fundamental beliefs that have been inculcatewd over many generations.
Leaderdship changed in April 1994. this change, however, was the result of over 80 years of struggle. Let us hope that we do not spend 4 generations changing attitudes. If we do, we have no right to regard ourselves as members of a world order.. Greg Preston");
