ANC General-Secretary Gwede Mantashe has called for a meeting with the leadership of the Umkhonto weSizwe Military Veterans Association over their controversial statement that former Cabinet minister Kader Asmal "must die".
The association said while it was not aware that Asmal was diagnosed with cancer in 2001, perhaps that is the reason "he wants to die fast".
It comes after Asmal criticised ANC policies and said president Jacob Zuma's government wants to militarise the police service. He slammed this move.
Asmal has been critical of government and some of its policies after leaving Cabinet.
ANC spokesperson Jackson Mthembu says the MK leaders are out of line.
