The African National Congress in the Free State and its alliance partners will picket at the Bloemfontein Magistrate's Court during the crimen injuria trial of the Reitz Four next week.
Four former students who stayed in the now-closed Reitz men's residence filmed a mock initiation of five black staff members into hostel activities in 2007. The employees, four women and a man, were seen on their hands and knees eating food which had apparently been urinated into by a white student. They eventually were charged with crimen injuria charges and the two-day trial starts on Monday 26 October. Free State ANC spokesperson Teboho Sikisi on Friday said the ANC would picket at the court on Monday and Tuesday and a protest march was planned for next week Friday, to the University of the Free State. This follows an announcement by new UFS Rector Jonathan Jansen, a week ago, that the university had pardoned the students and invited them to finish their studies, if they wish. Jansen's announcement about the Reitz students has since drawn huge criticism.
