Police are investigating the cause of the crash outside Beaufort West in which the deputy minister of Human Settlements and her driver were injured and two others were killed.

The government official and her driver could face culpable homicide charges.

It is believed the two died when their bakkie collided with Deputy Minister Zoe Kota-Fredericks's vehicle between Beaufort West and Leeugamka.

It is understood Kota-Fredericks and her driver were travelling in the direction of Cape Town when their car collided with a bakkie travelling in the opposite direction.

Beaufort West police spokesperson David de Klerk said the cause of the accident is unknown.

Police have, however, established the father and son travelling in the bakkie are from Cape Town.

"They were on their way to Beaufort West when the accident happened. A case of culpable homicide has been opened and will be investigated," said de Klerk.

Metro Emergency Services spokesperson Anzelle Smit said the deputy minister and her driver are recovering in hospital. Neither sustained very serious injuries.

Western Cape Community Safety MEC Lennit Max has promised a full-scale probe to establish the cause of the accident.
