President Jacob Zuma has reportedly stepped in to prevent Eskom boss Jacob Maroga from being fired.
Fin24 said, as a result, the Eskom board had become embroiled in a fierce dispute with government.
It is understood Eskom's board decided Maroga should vacate his post and on Thursday asked him to resign.
On Friday, Zuma ordered Public Enterprises Minister Barbara Hogan to intervene and prevent the dismissal.
Since then several government ministers have reportedly joined in the squabble. Maroga's tenure at the helm of Eskom has a controversial one, marred by planned power cuts.
