A farmer with only a basic school education has built himself a personal helicopter — out of wood.

The 20-year-old Wu Zhongyuan of Luoyang, China, says his creation can fly up to 800 metres high.

"I didn't have a design," he said, according to Dahe Daily.

"The only source for me to get relevant knowledge was surfing the internet via my mobile phone."

The blades are fashioned from elm trees and the frame from steel pipes while a motorcycle engine provides the power.

"I had this dream from childhood of not needing to climb mountains anymore. I wanted to go to school in my own flying machine," explained Wu.

The youngster's father, Wu Xizhao, is understandably proud of his son.

"He loves machines. At one time or another, he has taken apart and put back together every gadget in the house," he said.
