The Transport Department has confirmed seven of the nine people killed in a minibus taxi crash near Mokopane in Limpopo were Wits students travelling to Polokwane for a church pilgrimage.
A Toyota quantum hit the trailer of an overturned truck and caught alight on the N1 highway near the NYL plaza toll-gate last night.
Authorities say six people survived the crash and have been hospitalised.
Department spokesperson Kagiso Mootane says the Limpopo transport MEC has met with three of the survivors.
“They visited the hospital of Mokopane. Three of them are able to talk, they told us that they were students from Wits and were in the province to attend a church pilgrimage. We are pleading with our motorist at the end of the long weekend… let’s refrain from speeding.”
