Director-General in the Presidency Frank Chikane will not renew his contract at the end of October as agreed upon last year, he said on Thursday.
Briefing the media in Pretoria, Chikane said when he renewed his contract last year, he and the former president knew it would only be for one year. "Don't expect Frank Chikane to make an announcement, because the presidency will make an announcement about what's going to happen after October," he said. He was the oldest running director-general and had failed numerous times to resign because he had always been recalled. "All those who I came with are gone and most of those who came after me have gone and left me here. It has been a pleasure to serve the nation. It has been a sacrifice you make because it limits you." Chikane said he was "quite confident" that whether he was in his position or not, the presidency would still perform. "I would like when the new administration comes they don't have to think about Frank Chikane. Whatever happens I will make sure that the presidency runs and the government works." He said he had made sacrifices in his position in government for 12 years and therefore was not going to be "destabilised" at the last minute. "I offered that I would be available to assist and do whatever, I'm not going to abandon the office."
