A man died and 22 others were injured when a bakkie and a car collided on the N12 outside Kimberley, Northern Cape police said on Friday.

Captain Tshepo Mofokeng said the accident happened around 8pm on Thursday.

"Details are a bit sketchy, we don't know the cause of the accident."

Mofokeng said the man died on the scene. The injured were taken to a nearby hospital.

Police were investigating.
