Three people including a six-month-old baby were killed in an ambulance crash on the N10 near Buffelshoek on Tuesday, Eastern Cape police said.
Inspector Dumile Gwavu said the ambulance was transporting 13 patients from Cradock to a hospital in Port Elizabeth at about 8am when the driver lost control of the vehicle. The 18-year-old man was flung from the ambulance and died on scene. The ambulance landed on its side and trapped a 52-year-old woman and the baby inside. Both died on the scene. The other 10 patients, including the mother of the infant, were seriously injured and taken to a Port Elizabeth hospital. The driver was lightly injured. Eastern Cape health MEC Pemmy Majodina had visited the 11 survivors at the Livingstone hospital, her spokesperson Sizwe Khupelo said. Majodina expressed her condolences to the families of the three people who had died and said she planned to visit them.
