Humanitarian organisation Gift of the Givers has confirmed that missing South African photojournalist Shiraaz Mohamed is still alive.
Noting that today is the 13th day since his presumed abduction in Syria, the organisation says that its task team, which includes an experienced hostage negotiator, has made significant progress.
“Our limitation to make more detailed progress has been airstrikes and internal discord between certain groups,” it adds. “But in spite of these challenges we have received excellent co-operation through ‘connected’ people who, through their own individual research and ‘networks’ have confirmed that Shiraaz is alive.”
While it cannot itself verify the claim, despite allegedly being aware of Mohamed’s location, GOTG considers the intel credible.
“In the next 48 hours we are expecting more information so we wait patiently,” it continues. “We have a very decisive plan and will use it as leverage if the need arises.”
It admits that the reason for Mohamed’s abduction remains unknown, and that it may simply be a case of mistaken identity.
