JOHANNESBURG - The death toll of a taxi accident on the R82 in Walkerville has risen to nine.
It’s understood the taxi veered across the road and slammed into a concrete bus stop when the driver tried to avoid a car stationed in front of him.
Two people have been left critically injured, while four others sustained serious injuries.
ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak says they stabilised the injured at the scene and transported them to nearby hospitals.
“The majority of them were ejected as the taxi overturned several times. The exact circumstances are not yet known, but it’s understood the taxi was the only vehicle involved in this incident.”
Meanwhile, Netcare 911's Chris Botha says they spoke to the taxi driver while transporting him to hospital.
“The driver said something happened with the vehicle in front of him. He swerved and lost control. The taxi headed into concrete bus stop. This, through the impact, ripped the entire taxi apart.”
Gauteng traffic police have been roped in to help the South African Police Service investigate the cause of the taxi accident.
The provincial traffic police's Busaphi Nxumalo says they are trying to get more information.
