The family of murdered 22-year-old, Karabo Mokoena, has confirmed the victim had opened an assault case against her killer in the days leading to her death.
Mokoena’s family released the statement upon leaving Sandton police station where they were informed on the circumstances surrounding the young woman’s death.
Police have arrested Mokoena’s 27-year-old boyfriend who admitted to the crime on the same day in which the family declared her missing.
“He was arrested Wednesday night”, said Captain Mavela Masondo of the South African Police Services (SAPS) referring to the 28th of April. “The following day the body of the female was discovered in Lyndhurst, in a park.”
According to police, the body was found in a shallow grave and was completely unrecognisable to officers and family members due to severe burns.
“You know, not identifying your child is very traumatic”, said Mokoena’s uncle Tshepo Mokoena.
The accused will be appearing in the Johannesburg Magistrates Court on Friday morning.
