An execution-style shooting at OR Tambo has claimed one life and placed the security of the area under serious scrutiny.
According to an eyewitness report released by the South African Police Services (SAPS), a man driving a group of six passengers was flagged and blocked on the off-ramp from the highway to the airport by two suspicious vehicles. The victim was then fatally wounded when one suspect exited his vehicle and opened fire. The victim’s vehicle was then stolen and his body left on the busy roadway.
“The South African Police Service can confirm that an unfortunate incident, which resulted in the fatal shooting of one person, occurred near the O R Tambo International Airport late yesterday afternoon, at approximately 16:30”, reads the official statement.
SAPS authorities say the passengers were taken along with the vehicle and were dropped-off near Rhodesfield, Kempton Park after having been robbed of their valuables.
The shooting comes a few months after a brazen heist occurred at the International Airport which involved suspects dressed as policemen using counterfeit police equipment, including vehicles.
“The SAPS will thoroughly investigate this heinous and violent crime committed close to a national key point, the O R Tambo International Airport”, said Acting National Police Commissioner, Khomotso Phahlane. “We would not at this stage want to speculate on the motive for the crime. Once we have further facts at our disposal gathered from the crime scene, victims, witnesses and other relevant evidence, we will be in a position to make further details available”.
The investigations and questioning of various witnesses is, at this point, still under way.
