Western Cape Police Commissioner Khombinkosi Jula has condemned the murders of several children across several Cape Town communities over the past few weeks.
Nineteen children have been killed in the province since the start of this year.
In the most recent tragedy, three-year-old Courtney Pieters was raped and murdered in Elsies River.
Her alleged killer appeared in court on Wednesday.
Mortimer Saunders was arrested on Sunday night, a day after the child's body was found in Epping.
Saunders faces one count of murder, one count of kidnapping and two counts of rape.
Jula says perpetrators are preying and pouncing on the society’s most vulnerable.
“While the arrest of the suspect in the Courtney Pieters case may provide very little comfort for the family, we’re at least finding comfort in knowing that we’re presenting a very strong case before the court and that justice will be done.”
The case has been postponed to ascertain whether or not Saunders can apply for Legal Aid representation.
