A man and a woman in their thirties robbed a First National Bank in Watervalboven, Mpumalanga police said on Wednesday.

Captain Leonard Hlathi said the two people entered the bank around 3.30pm on Tuesday and pretended to be customers.

Once inside, the pair pulled out firearms and held up staff at gunpoint. They forced the staff into the safe and locked them inside.

The two then took a "huge undisclosed amount of cash" and fled.

A passer-by saw that the bank was still open around 4.30pm with no one inside and informed police.

When police arrived, they found the staff inside the safe.

No one was injured during the incident and no shots were fired.

A case of armed robbery was being investigated.
