Members of the South African Police Services (SAPS) organised crime unit in Kwazulu-Natal have arrested three men in possession and with intent to sell R104 million worth of heroin following several weeks of investigative work.
Aided by members of the Pretoria Crime Intelligence department and the Hawks, KZN authorities gathered information regarding the transportation of the drugs from Mozambique to South African through the Kosi Bay Port of Entry.
A task team present at the port identified the suspicious vehicle and found several bags of drugs within a makeshift compartment on the undercarriage of the vehicle.
The driver, a 27-year-old local man, was arrested on the spot while further investigations by the Hawks led to the arrest of two foreign nationals who were found in a Gauteng residence with R50 000 cash on them.
Police will continue investigations to identify the source and potential buyers of the drugs.
The suspects are scheduled to appear before the Johannesburg Magistrates Court on Wednesday.
