The Department of Education has urged families to keep children at home today following the SA National Taxi Association (Santaco) strike fearing for the safety of learners who commute to school.
The strike, which began today, has blocked sections of major roadways in Gauteng and has coincided with the examination period of many schools in the area.
However, Gauteng MEC of Education Panyaza Lesufi has ensured that measures will be taken to accommodate children who are unable to reach theirs schools today.
“The safety of our learners comes first”, tweeted Lesufi. “No learner will be disadvantaged because of the #TaxiProtest”.
Santaco drivers have begun mass protest action over the amount which they must pay to finance their Toyota Quantum buses, which they say is “completely unaffordable”.
