The city of Cape Town has offered a reward for any information which could lead to the arrest of a lone gunmen responsible for the death of Democratic Alliance (DA) Councillor, Xolile Gwangxu.
Gwangxu was found dead on Wednesday night outside his office at a community hall in Philippi East following a series of meetings with community members which had kept him there after hours.
“It’s indeed chilling news that we received last night”, said mayoral spokesperson Zara Nicholson. “Councillor Gwangxu was busy with a series of community meetings last night…and as he was leaving his ward offices a lone man walked up to him and shot him…it is deeply tragic”.
Community and party members have been left in shock with many defining the late councillor as a passionate and deeply dedicated man.
Police have not released any information regarding the circumstances of the murder as investigations are still in their early stages. It is, however, understood that Gwangxu died on the spot after being shot.
Possible motivations for the murder are purely speculative at the moment with some people hinting at political motivations as likely cause.
“We are unable to speculate at all”, added Nicholson. “We certainly hope that it is not politically motivated”.
