Cape Town Mayor Patricia de Lille has assured angry Imizamo Yethu community members that reconstruction efforts in the area will be speeded up.
She visited the area on Monday following days of violent protests.
Residents are up in arms about the slow pace of rebuilding following a deadly and devastating fire in March.
On Monday, residents were adamant that they would intensify demonstrations until De Lille addressed them.
Demonstrators say that they’re fed up with living in a temporary relocation area.
One resident says that they’re tired of empty promises.
“After the fire, they came to us and promised us. They told us about super blocking. We demand those promises.”
The mayor eventually addressed the community on Monday.
“I’m going to speed up the re-blocking and understand that people are very frustrated.”
At least four arrests have been made following clashes with police.
