A small group of Woodstock residents facing evictions received a small victory this week as the judge presiding over the Bromwell Street residents court application decided to step-away from the case.
Judge Leslie Weinkove, who had previously caused a stir with “offensive” comments made during the trial, decided to step down following the presentation of new evidence by the Ndifuna Ukwazi Law Centre which highlighted the city’s non-compliance regarding authorisation for its planned temporary relocation site.
The case for low-cost social housing within the inner city has been described by many as one which would make great financial growth sense for a city which is greatly expanding.
The case will now be heard by Judge Mark Sher and will follow a timetable agreed upon by both parties involved.
The fight against the eviction of Woodstock residents, specifically those residing on Bromwell Street, has been long-standing and widely debated.
