A man accused of stabbing a 12-year-old boy 33 times for unknown reasons, is set to appear in the Cape Town Magistrates Court on Thursday.
The man allegedly attacked the boy in a public area while the victim was playing soccer.
The family of the boy have expressed their frustration and confusion at the incident saying that they are battling to make sense of it entirely.
“Where should people’s kids play? There’s no [safe] place for children to play. It shouldn’t be like that”, said the boy’s grandfather.
The boy managed to live through the attack with seemingly severe injuries to his hands for which he will have to undergo surgery.
2017 has seen an unprecedented increase in severe and heinous crimes against children under the age of 17.
The SAPS says that it is fast-tracking plans to implement preventive measures aimed at curbing violence against children.
