A 29-year-old man from Khayelitsha is set to appear before the courts in connection to the rape and murder of 4-year-old Iyapa Yamile almost 2 months ago.
The South African Police Services (SAPS) have been eager to prove their worth following dismal results with the last two suspects in the case having been released due to lack of circumstantial evidence linking them to the murder.
The 4-year-old’s body was found in Town Two in Lingelethu stuffed inside a plastic bag and presents another in a long line of violent crimes against minors in the province since the beginning of 2017.
The SAPS have come under fire from community members for their lack of results in the last 2 months and Police Minister Fikile Mbalula has afforded special priority to strategies aimed at tackling violent crimes against children.
Still, further investigations must take place surrounding the new accused.
The trial will take place next week.
