Affordable housing activist group, Reclaim the City (RTC) has reported that campaigners in Greenpoint were attacked by armed masked men on Wednesday night within the walls of the occupied Helen Bowden Nurses Home.
Eight attackers burst through security on the premises with pangas, knives and guns shouting at protesting residents of the State-owned, yet unused, building, to leave.
“They broke windows, ransacked rooms and pulled their weapons shouting ‘Leave this building, you cannot stay here’”, read an RTC statement.
According to the civic organisation, the SAPS were quick to arrive on the scene and apprehend at least five of the attackers.
The organisation has reiterated that their form of protest has been completely peaceful and with no incidents for the 5-month duration of their occupation.
Although investigations are still in the early stages, activists believe the attack was planned intentionally to scare and break them from their purpose.
“Their intention was clear – to intimidate with violence so that residents would leave their new home”, expressed RTC.
The SAPS has yet to release a statement on the matter.
