The body of a 19-year-old man has been found in Hout Bay following violent protests in the Imizamo Yethu and Mandela Park area on Friday night.
Officials say the African National Congress office in the Hout Bay community has also been torched, while containers housing shops owned by foreigners have been damaged.
Shacks that have been illegally erected have been demolished to make way for the City of Cape Town's redevelopment plans in the fire-ravaged areas.
This led to balaclava-clad protesters clashing with police and intimidating community leaders, who've been instrumental in negotiations between residents and city officials earlier this week.
Western Cape SAPS spokesperson Frederick van Wyk says protesters have also been arrested.
“An operation was initiated by SAPS to assist with the arrests of protesters. Protesters were moving between shacks and pelted police members and nyalas with stones and objects. They barricaded the road at Imizamo Yethu to prevent police from entering the area.”
