Police have fired rubber bullets to disperse a crowd in the Silahliwe informal settlement near Meyerton where protesters have barricaded a major road with rubble.
Angry residents have blocked the R59 in an ongoing service delivery protest, demanding that provincial government step in.
Police spokesperson Kay Makhubele said: “This has been happening for a while. The community of Silahliwe in Meyerton have barricaded the road the R59. They closed it with burning tyres and other items on the road. The road is open now but community members are standing along the road and cops are dispersing them using rubber bullets.”
Makhubele says no injuries have been reported, but some vehicles were stoned.
“We got the report that there are vehicles which were stoned. We are appealing to those whose vehicles were damaged to report the cases so that those matters could be investigated.”
Police remain in the area to monitor the situation.
