The Western Cape Education Department is celebrating the best reading and mathematics scores in South Africa in a new international study released yesterday.
It's the only province in the country to achieve more than 600 points for both subjects in the Southern and Eastern Africa Consortium for Monitoring Educational Quality.
The assessment was carried out on Grade 6 learners across 13 countries.
Education MEC Debbie Schaefer says the assessment is an important indicator to gauge performance in the province and the country.
“We will study the report and see which areas we need to improve on.”
The second best-performing province was Gauteng.
