Twitter has yet again struck a social chord this time following an inflammatory remark made by the leader of the Black First Land First movement (BLF) regarding the events of the Holocaust.
Andile Mngxitama wrote on Thursday, “For those claiming the legacy of the holocaust is ONLY negative, think about the lampshades and Jewish soap (sic)”.
Mngxitama stated that the comment was meant to prove that Jewish people are racist because of their lack of reaction to a similar comment made by Premier Helen Zille on colonialism.
The South African Jewish Board of Deputies has stated that it intends to take full legal action against the BLF leader.
“We just gave back to them what Helen Zille gave”, said Mngxitama.
Zille was ostracised by her party and by many South Africans following a similarly worded tweet surrounding colonialism.
This is not the first, nor likely the last, time that Mngxitama and his movement have courted controversy.
The Jewish board's Wendy Kahn says there is no justification for such sentiments.
“We don’t find genocide to be humorous at all. We lost six million people in the Holocaust, in addition to the many other millions killed.”
Kahn says the board has met with its lawyers and will be taking legal action.
